We showed up to Englishtown Raceway on Saturday with a brand new kart scheme, a fired-up driver, and every reason to be optimistic. JAM Graphics had just finished the new livery, and it looked incredible. Brady was ready. The team was ready. I was ready.
And then the engine started lying to us.
Session After Session, Nothing Made Sense
In the first run, Brady set his fastest lap of the day. Then it started sputtering. We changed parts. We changed more parts. We ran 5 or 6 laps, it would fall apart again, and we’d be back in the pits trying to figure out what we missed.
This went on all day.
If you’ve ever been the person responsible for making a race program work, you know exactly what that feels like. You’re running through every possibility in your head, second-guessing every decision, and trying to project calm while internally you’re losing your mind.
By the end of the day, we hadn’t solved anything. And I had to make a call.
Pulling the Plug on NKC
After consulting with our engine builder, we made the decision to withdraw from the NKC event. It wasn’t easy. Nobody wants to scratch from a race weekend, especially early in the season. But running a broken kart in competition wasn’t going to help Brady, wasn’t going to help our partners, and wasn’t going to help us figure out what was actually wrong.
Instead, we packed up and headed to Oreville Karting Club in Mertztown for a practice session. Our engine support team needed to see the problem in real time to diagnose it.
Here’s the thing about taking equipment to your support team. You always have that fear that it won’t act up while they’re watching. Kind of like taking your car to the mechanic only for it to run perfectly the whole time they have it.
That did not happen this time. The engine sputtered and died on the very first run.
Three Problems, One Humbling Answer
Our support team went to work and found three issues.
The carburetor had a valve that was manufactured incorrectly. The jetting needed to be adjusted. And then there was the third thing.
We changed the spark plug.
The engine roared to life.
An $8 spark plug. That’s what we had been chasing all day at Englishtown. That’s what cost us the NKC weekend. A part that costs less than a fast-food lunch was at the root of the whole thing.
I’ll be honest. That one stings a little.
Brady Said It Best
Brady came in after a full 12-minute session, helmet off, huge smile on his face, and said “Now that is a race kart.”
That moment made the whole frustrating weekend worth it. Because now we know the kart is right. We know what we have. And we head into Oreville this Sunday with confidence instead of questions.
What I Took Away From This Weekend
A few things stuck with me after we packed up and headed home.
First, making the hard call to scratch was the right move. It was tempting to gut it out and compete anyway. But protecting the integrity of the program and getting the problem solved properly was worth more than a result on a bad day.
Second, troubleshooting under pressure is part of this. You can prepare, plan, and do everything right and still get humbled by a component that costs less than a tank of gas. That’s motorsport. That’s also just life.
Third, having the right people around you matters more than almost anything else. Our engine support team found in one session what we couldn’t solve in a full day. That’s the value of expertise.
What’s Next
We’re racing at Oreville Karting Club in Mertztown this Sunday. Gates open at 10 AM, and racing starts shortly after noon. If you’re in the area and want to come out and see the new scheme in person, reach out and let me know. We’d love to have you.
Brady’s custom suit is also in production and should arrive within the next two weeks. Once it does, we’ll be scheduling a session with Tim and the team at Mint Digital Marketing to create the first official assets for our partners to use across their social media channels.
To every partner who makes this program possible: thank you. None of this happens without your support. We’ll keep putting in the work to make sure you’re proud to be part of Hornet Nation Racing.

Now let’s go racing.
